South Africa 1650-2000

The aim of the model is :

  1. To simulate the genesis of a recent urban system by reconstructing the patterns of interaction between cities including the urbanization waves on the long term, since the beginning of the colonization.

  2. To test hypothesis, comparing with old urban systems, about the role of more intense communication speed and belated innovation cycles in the emergence of higher hierarchical structure

Starting from the generic model SIMPOP2 and following a similar way as the United States model, we identify which adaptations are necessary for simulating the main specific emerging properties of the South African urban system :

  • The role of settlement frontier (see figure 1) in early urbanization (first along the coast, second towards the mining center)

  • The role of cities which have dependent world-city functions (exogenously driven development)
